Into the heart of Tamil Nadu, this is a special 10-day adventure enjoying the lush landscape of Southern India, to exploring stunning historical temples while being submersed into the culture of colors and flavors of India.

Itinerary

Arrival (9/4 and 9/5) Arrival to Chennai - Taj Coromandel

  • 9/4 - most flights arrive at 1 to 2am, 1 extra day of hotel costs is included, allowing you time to rest; next day begins our evening gathering

  • 9/5 - Opening evening orientation and dinner

Day 1 (9/6) Kāñcipuram

  • Explore local Ganeśa temple to start our journey in the Mylapore, Chennai area, and drive to Kāñcipuram (silk weaving area for lungi, sarong, & scarves)

Day 2-3 (9/7-9/8) Mahabalipuram

Day 4-5 (9/9-9/10) Thiruvannamalai

  • Explore the holy Arunachala Hill(light 40-minute continuous walk up to the meditation cave and around the surroundings)

  • Darshan at Arunachalesvara Temple, one of the Pancha Bhuta temples

Day 6 (9/10) Chidambaram

  • Darshan at the sacred Nataraja Temple, symbolizing the cosmic dance

  • Activities: Bizarre, market shopping, dance performances, kirtan chanting

Day 7 (9/11) Thanjavur

Day 8-9 (9/12-9/13) Madurai

  • Architecture tour the Meenakshi Amman Temple, dedicated to Pārvatī, courtyard complex of gold and huge granite structures is amongst the four most important of the 68 pilgrimage places in Shaivism

  • Silk capital of India: Known for handwoven silk sarees, local shopping of unique cultural gifts, and closing evening dinner

Day 10 (9/14) Departures from Madurai (IXM)

  • Airport transfers back to Chennai and onward travel (Not covered in your retreat fee and considered out of pocket - Flights through GoIndigo for a group rate may be an option)

  • Option for a sleeping pod or retiring room can be coordinated for a fee prior to your departure (no conventional hotel inside the Chennai terminal)

Pricing

Cost: $2,725 each (shared room) or $3,225 each (private room)

Includes all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), one extra day arrival on 9/4 to Chennai hotel as flights commonly arrive after midnight, luxury and small village accommodations, unlimited bottle water, private A/C ground transportation, plenty of time for shopping, walking, and exploring, yoga practice at some select hotel venues, dedicated guide at all times, temple entry fees.

Not included: Airfare to Chennai (MAA), personal spending, tip to our local guide and driver (~$8 to 10/per day on closing day), return travel from Madurai (IXM) ~$80/one-way flight on GoIndigo, VISA & passport fees, airport baggage fees (if any - pack light), affordable laundry services available at hotel

  • Every first adventure is easier with a group of like-minded individuals and a multi-lingual travel guide. We have carefully selected hotels, temples, and restaurants that are safe and clean for Westerners, while allowing you time and space to explore the culture.

    You will be granted VIP access to a few select temples, and offer you free time to explore the sacred grounds. All the details of your logistics, entry tickets, and private transportation to and from airports are all coordinated and covered for you. Join us for one of your best experiences to South India during the right time of year when it’s not too hot.

  • Yes, all US travelers are required to purchase a tourist Visa to enter India; along with a passport. The fastest option is the Indian e-Visa (electronic authorization (link here), which can be obtained online for 1 year ($60) or up to 5-years ($80), with multiple re-entry visits.

  • For those traveling from the U.S. , it is highly recommended to fly from a European city (Paris, Frankfurt, London) which all have direct flights to Chennai (MAA). Otherwise, most airlines will route you to Mumbai or New Delhi, which then requires another flight to Chennai. Make it easy on yourself with a softer landing DIRECTLY into Chennai.

    Jen will help you book through American Express Travel which often has cheaper flights and more availability beyond Google Flights searches. Again, many people on this trip with fly through Europe to get a direct flight to Chennai - allowing for less stress. A private car is already arranged for you at the Chennai airpot.

  • Yoga Quest Tours was hand selected for this trip. With presence and personality, our private tour guide speaks 7 languages, is extremely familiar with the cultural areas, and his team has serviced over 4,000 travelers privately on small group tours throughout India.

    This will be our fourth trip together with Yoga Quest Tours, and all communication is set-up via WhatsApp for clarity. This helps with travel departures, airport pick-ups, VIP access to the temples, and photo sharing.

  • Yes, travel insurance is recommended along with proof in the case of emergencies, medical event, or other situations (e.g. weather, family or work obligations, etc.). Many flights conveniently include that affordable option for purchase.

  • Any allergies or food sensitivities can be provided anytime. About 90% of the meals will be vegetarian, 10% chicken as an option only. Many of the meals will be family style, allowing you to experience the flavors and connections. You can always special/custom order (if necessary).

  • While we are in a fully A/C tour bus for all ground transportation and traveling to different checkpoints, we will always travel as one unit and team. No special rides. We will have adventures in motorized rickshaws, walk every day, but if you don’t do well in a bus for 2-3 hours, then consider wisely.

With the guidance of Yoga Quest Tours, Yusuf and I have traveled together on multiple, consecutive trips from South India, to Mumbai, to the Himalayan heights of Dharmsala.
